Why do you think they all come to us?
Why is it that colleagues from all over the world, be it Europe, USA, South America, Australia, Russia – from all these countries have already come to us to be trained in diagnostics, operations (liposuctions) and postoperative treatment, and then totally Happy to return home to immediately fully adopt our approach and recommendations? And then invite us to assist and optimize a series of operations at their respective clinic.
Maybe because
- that we have been operating on lipoedemas since 2003, so we have more than 20 years of experience with it, and have been firmly convinced since 2012 that Humanmed’s water jet surgical technique is the only sensible surgical technique (we have never had a complication since then), or but,

Whatever the reason may be. It seems that we diagnose and operate quite satisfactorily – which of course primarily benefits the patients. This is not least because our medical measures are generally significantly cheaper than those of plastic surgeons or clinics, for example.
Our team
Dr. Michael Offermann, the initiator of lipedema and the founder of “Vascular Diseases Rhine-Ruhr” in 1991, began diagnosing lipedema in 2001 and the related operations in 2003.
When lipedema was officially recognized as a disease in the Federal Republic for the first time in 2017, he communicated with the then Health Minister Spahn and the GBA because everyone involved did not really have experience with the disease. After more than 20 years, Dr. Offermann is now invited to lectures, congresses and operations all over the world, as an expert in social courts or in the Federal Government’s Petitions and Health Committee.ng.

Alzira will have a groundbreaking unit for the comprehensive treatment of lipedema in Spain
Michael Offermann, vascular surgeon, speaks to REASON about this disease, which already affects one in ten women worldwide. Michael Offermann, vascular surgeon, phlebologist, and one of the world’s leading authorities in the surgical treatment of lipedema, visited Alzira (Valencia) to present the innovative UVALI (Valencian Lipedema Unit), which is integrated into the Quod Clinic facilities. As a founding member of the German Society for Lipedema Surgery and one of the main proponents of the WAL method, he has developed a protocol that drastically reduces discomfort, risks, and waiting times between surgeries for a condition that already affects at least one in ten women worldwide.

Dr. Igor Tsarenko, a Ukrainian colleague who already has a German license and will soon also be a German surgeon and phlebologist, has been working on the topic of lipedema since 2021 and is now completely independent in diagnostics and has largely already achieved his goal when it comes to operations.
In the weeks before the start of the Ukrainian war, Offermann and Tsarenko organized a lipedema webinar with the University of Moscow, in which a whopping 260 Russian colleagues took part, all of whom would probably have liked to come to us 😉 – only the war didn’t let them .
What we do
We operate as early as possible. Because one thing is clear: even an expert cannot predict for the individual patient when and to what extent the lipedema will worsen.
But, and this is 99.9% certain: it will increase and can even “explode”, e.g. during hormonal changes during puberty, with the first pill, during the first pregnancy, or even during menopause.
This means: an operation should take place as early as possible!
For example, we will operate on your calves and upper legs within a week and write you off sick for 14 days (AU). Thanks to our unique, postoperative treatment, which we invented about 7 years ago (you have to live in the cold chamber 😉 ), your legs and arms will look like new after just a few weeks.
The same applies to the buttocks. This can also be operated on with the OS within a week – but of course only if your blood work cooperates.
You will receive this and all other relevant information, e.g. that has to do with money, taxes, health insurance and the law, from us regularly in our Friday Zoom seminars, in which you as our patients can of course take part free of charge – but only if if you have previously read the short version of our (constantly updated) “Lipo brochure”. Don’t worry, it’s really just the short version – only 69 pages 😉

Offermann has been “retired” since the end of 2024 – after 40 years of surgery. This means that support, training, and even education in lipedema now “only” take place with colleagues on-site – wherever they are in the world.
